So maybe someone can help me figure this one out. I'm running Windows 7 64 with the latest Realtek (2.49) drivers installed. Speakers are set to 5.1 and configured properly (each one responds when pressed at in the speakers tab) - everything's fine... in games that support OpenAL. I'm trying to play Far Cry which of course doesn't and uses EAX 2.0 (which Realtek's onboard chip officially supports - but only under XP as Vista and onwards fudged the DirectSound up).
Creative has ALchemy that comes into play here, and, true, when I was using ALchemy and the modified Realtek X-fi drivers I could get EAX and surround in all games, even the oldest ones, it worked perfectly (even HL2 which always reset to 2 speakers worked). But those drivers gave me a lot of cracking and static and inferior sound quality (there's always a catch) so I had to ditch them. Realtek has their own "ALchemy-like" solution which is supposed to do the same thing called 3D SoundBack which not only doesn't run on 7 unless run in compatiblity mode, the only game that I tried it and it worked on before was Morrowind.
In Far Cry, it doesn't do anything for 5.1 - although the reverberation effects of EAX do -seem- to be working. But no 5.1.
I've set it to 5.1 surround in the game and it makes no difference. Anyone have any idea what to try? It's sad that this software has been in beta 0.1 version for around 2 years now. Realtek is a seriously ghetto company.
